Life has a crazy way of throwing curve balls; creating challenges, losses and disruptions we must fight to overcome.
Just a few weeks into my senior year of college I discovered I was pregnant. I felt unprepared and unequipped to be responsible for a life. I worked many hours while going to school fulltime, but still fell short. I went from feeling like I was on top of the world to feeling like the weight of the world was on top of me. I remember having to go to my local social services to seek public assistance.
It was the most humbling experience of my life and changed the trajectory of my career. I’ll never forget my experience, sitting across from the worker at Social Services. I felt so belittled and judged as I completed my face to face interview for assistance. I walked out of that building feeling so disappointed because my application was denied. I felt so heavy and scared but determined not to let it break me.
I became so motivated to break through the misconceptions and stereotypes that plague “single mothers”.
I walked across the stage and graduated just three months after having my son. I purchased a new car within that first year of having my son. By his second birthday, I was hosting his birthday party in a townhome that I bought. But the biggest blessing, was the phone call I received in August of 2015. The same Social Services agency that interviewed me for public assistance, was now calling to offer me a position as a social worker.
There I was four years later, walking into that same building, riding the elevator to the third floor, just one floor under the executive level. I know now that everything I went through was preparing me for my purpose. I’m so passionate about helping other mothers overcome barriers and become self-sufficient. As I transitioned to a career in real estate, my passion expanded to not only help mothers become self-sufficient but to also help them build wealth through home ownership and real estate investment.
